Finding Your Purpose and Why in the World

Drawing inspiration from Holly Ransom

As leaders, we are often consumed by the daily grind of our work and the demands of our roles. It is easy to lose sight of why we do what we do, and what our ultimate purpose is in life. However, discovering our purpose is essential for fulfilment and enjoyment in our lives. In this article, we will explore the two common ways leaders find their purpose.

Deep Retrospection

The first way to discover our purpose is through deep retrospection which is about looking back on one’s life. This involves getting off the grid and engaging with material that will prompt challenging questions. By creating space for meditation, journaling, and disconnection from routine, demands, and assumptions, we can begin to reflect on our lives in a deeper way.

Often, our purpose has left a trail of breadcrumbs through our lives. Its essence lies in the things we most enjoy, the times we felt most ourselves, and the moments we felt particularly engaged. If we haven’t found our purpose yet, it is essential to create the space to go hunting for the trail.

We can ask ourselves a series of questions, such as:

  • What brings us the most joy?
  • What activities do we find ourselves drawn to, even when they are challenging?
  • What are the common threads that run through the things we love to do?

By answering these questions honestly and with reflection, we can begin to uncover our purpose.

Stand Where Lightning Strikes

The second way to discover our purpose is to get far outside of our comfort zones and seek out new experiences. We need to stand where lightning strikes. This means daring ourselves to; climb mountains, volunteer, freelance, travel, public speak, and investigate new things. We need to create a collision course with purpose.

If we feel like we are living a life that is not our own, we need to try new things and take risks. We need to push ourselves outside of our comfort zones and experience things that are challenging and unfamiliar. By doing this, we can gain new perspectives on ourselves and the world around us.

By standing where lightning strikes, we create the conditions for our purpose to reveal itself. We can discover new passions, talents, and strengths that we never knew we had. We can develop a deeper understanding of ourselves and our place in the world.

Conclusion

Discovering our purpose is essential for a fulfilling and enjoyable life. As leaders, it is important to take the time to reflect on our lives and ask ourselves challenging questions. We can create space for meditation, journaling, and disconnection from routine to engage in deep retrospection. We can also seek out new experiences and push ourselves outside of our comfort zones to stand where lightning strikes.

Through these two methods, we can uncover our purpose and begin to live a life that is aligned with our deepest values and desires. By living in a way that allows our purpose to find us, we can achieve a sense of fulfilment and joy that is beyond measure.
